The Golden Bush: Growing, Foraging, and Infusing Gorse for Skin

If there is a plant that defines the wild, untamed beauty of the New Zealand landscape, it is the humble gorse (Ulex europaeus). While farmers often view it as a stubborn pest, herbalists and foragers know it for what it truly is: a blazing beacon of golden sunshine that blooms almost year-round and holds incredible botanical magic for the skin.

At Pukerau Wild & Cured, we love celebrating the overlooked treasures of our landscape. Here is how we harvest, process, and infuse wild gorse into a luxurious skin-loving oil.

1. The Foraging Life: Wild Gorse

Gorse thrives in poor soil, coastal winds, and harsh conditions, asking for nothing while giving everything.

  • The Vibe: Covered in brilliant yellow, pea-like blossoms that smell remarkably like rich coconut, vanilla, and sweet almond. Walking past a gorse hedge on a warm day is an absolute aromatherapy experience.

  • The Magic: Because they bloom when little else is out, they are a vital food source for bees and a brilliant, resilient plant ally for natural skincare.

2. Harvesting with Care

Foraging gorse requires a bit of patience (and thick gloves!).

  • When to pick: We harvest the bright yellow blossoms on a dry, sunny afternoon when the essential oils within the petals are at their peak fragrance and potency.

  • How to pick: Gently pluck or snip the open yellow petals away from the thorny green calyx. A little tip from the wild-crafter's handbook: bring a pair of sturdy leather gardening gloves, because gorse has earned its reputation for a reason!

3. Drying the Blossoms

Just like our calendula, fresh gorse flowers need proper handling before they meet oil.

  • The Process: Spread the bright yellow petals across drying racks in a shaded, warm, and well-ventilated space.

  • The Result: As they dry, they retain that incredible warm, coconut-vanilla aroma, filling your drying room with the scent of high summer.

4. The Craft: Infusing into Liquid Gold

To capture the essence of gorse, we steep the dried blossoms in a nourishing, skin-loving carrier oil using a slow, patient infusion method.

  • The Infusion: The oil gently draws out the fat-soluble plant compounds, antioxidants, and that sweet, honeyed fragrance over several weeks.

  • The Result: A deeply comforting, beautifully scented botanical oil that smells like sunshine and coconut, ready to be whipped into balms or blended into our skincare line.

5. Why Your Skin Loves Gorse

Beyond its intoxicating scent, gorse offers gentle comfort to the skin:

  • Deeply Calming: Traditional herbal use highlights gorse for its soothing properties, making it wonderful for calming dry, weather-beaten, or irritated skin.

  • Antioxidant Rich: Packed with natural compounds that help protect the skin barrier against environmental stressors.

  • Pure Aromatherapy: The natural scent provides a grounding, uplifting mood boost every time you smooth it on.
