Why Real Ingredients Beat Market Trends: My Journey with Coconut Cream and Tallow Soap
When you browse online marketplaces today, it is easy to get overwhelmed by a sea of neon-colored bars swirling with synthetic micas and glitter. It is equally easy to spot shops capitalizing on the "goat's milk soap" trend. But here is a hard truth: if a maker doesn't have milking goats or access to fresh, whole farm milk, adding a couple of teaspoons to a batch doesn't make it a true milk soap. It’s mostly marketing.
As a soapmaker who doesn’t happen to own dairy goats or live in the tropics where coconuts grow, I had to look closely at what was genuinely accessible, sustainable, and deeply functional for my recipes. That is how I fell in love with thick canned coconut cream.

The Power of Coconut Cream and Tallow
My signature bars are built on a foundation of a large tallow content, supercharged with rich canned coconut cream. Far from just being a filler, coconut cream introduces natural sugars and fatty acids that supercharge the lather, resulting in a bar that is exceptionally hard, deeply creamy, and long-lasting.
Paired with tallow, which creates a wonderfully balanced, conditioning, and traditional cleansing bar, coconut cream adds a wonderful structure and luxurious feel that synthetic additives simply cannot replicate.
Working with Coconut Cream: The Ice Cube Method
Working with coconut cream in soapmaking requires a bit of care because of its natural sugars, which can easily scorch and burn when they come into contact with caustic lye.
To prevent this, I freeze the coconut cream into ice cubes and slowly add the lye to the frozen cubes. This keeps the temperature controlled, prevents scorching, and ensures a smooth, safe soap-making process while preserving all the nourishing components of the cream.
What Coconut Cream Brings to Your Skin and Your Shower
Coconut cream is an absolute powerhouse, offering benefits that go far beyond a standard sudsy wash:
Remarkable Hardness and Longevity: Because of its heavy fat and solid content, these bars are very hard and last for weeks in the shower without melting away quickly, giving you incredible mileage and value out of every single batch.
Rich, Creamy Lather: The natural sugars and fats in coconut cream boost lather stability, creating a dense, bubbly, and incredibly creamy foam that feels silky and conditioning as you wash rather than drying.
Rich in Nourishing Fatty Acids & Lipids: Coconut cream is naturally dense in lauric acid and other medium-chain fatty acids. These lipids help reinforce and support the skin's natural moisture barrier, locking in hydration rather than stripping it away like commercial detergents do.
Vitamins and Antioxidants: Packed with naturally occurring vitamins (like Vitamin C and E) and essential minerals from the coconut kernel, it provides a gentle, antioxidant-rich wash that helps soothe and calm the skin.
Rustic, Not Rattled: Embracing Authentic Soap
My soap bars will never win a beauty pageant for vibrant, glowing colors. You won't find synthetic colorants or shimmering mica powders here.
They might look a little more rustic, but they are entirely authentic. Every shade comes naturally from the oils, butters, and botanicals themselves.
Whole Plants over Processed Extracts
This commitment to authenticity extends straight to the botanicals I use. When I list a botanical ingredient on my label—whether I’ve harvested, dried, infused, or frozen it yourself—you are getting the whole structure of the plant's benefits.
Many commercial or highly processed ingredients rely on isolated, separated, and heavily extracted components. By keeping things whole and unprocessed, the plant retains its complete profile, working harmoniously with the coconut cream and tallow base to treat your skin the way nature intended.
