The Golden Healer: Growing, Harvesting, and Infusing Calendula for Skin

There are few plants as cheerful, resilient, and deeply healing as Calendula officinalis. Often known simply as pot marigold, these bright orange and yellow sun-worshippers have been a cornerstone of traditional herbal apothecaries for centuries.

At Pukerau Wild & Cured, calendula is one of our absolute favorite botanicals to work with. Here is the full story of how we grow, harvest, and transform this golden blossom into a nutrient-dense oil to nourish your skin.

1. Growing Calendula

Calendula is wonderfully unfussy, making it a joy to grow in a cottage garden or alongside a homestead.

  • The Vibe: They love full sun and well-draining soil. Once they get going, they bloom prolifically from late spring right through the first frosts of autumn.

  • The Magic: The more you pick them, the more they flower! Harvesting the blossoms encourages the plant to put its energy into producing even more golden heads, making it a generous and giving garden companion.

2. Harvesting at the Right Moment

Timing is everything when gathering calendula for skincare.

  • When to pick: We harvest the blossoms on a dry, sunny morning after the morning dew has completely evaporated. This ensures the plant's active compounds are at their peak and prevents any excess moisture from getting trapped, which can cause mold during drying.

  • How to pick: Gently pinch or snip the flower head right at the base of the calyx (where the green sepals meet the stem). We look for fully open, vibrant blossoms that haven't started to fade or go to seed.

3. Drying the Blossoms

Before those fresh petals can touch oil, they need to be properly dried.

  • The Process: We spread the harvested flower heads in a single layer on drying racks in a warm, well-ventilated, and shaded space out of direct sunlight. Keeping them out of the sun is crucial to preserve their bright golden color and delicate medicinal properties.

  • The Test: They are ready when the petals feel completely crisp and dry to the touch, with no residual moisture hiding in the thicker flower bases.

4. The Craft: Triple-Infusing in Oil

To make a truly potent botanical oil, you can’t rush the process. While a single-infusion works, we use a triple-infusion method to extract every last drop of goodness.

  • Infusion One: The dried calendula blossoms are gently submerged in a high-quality carrier oil (like nourishing olive or sweet almond oil) and left to steep in warmth for weeks, allowing the oil to pull out the fat-soluble compounds.

  • Infusions Two & Three: Once strained, we take that already-golden oil and pour it over a brand new batch of freshly dried calendula flowers, repeating the process.

  • The Result: By the third round, the oil transforms into a deep, rich, luminous amber-gold. It is intensely concentrated with the plant's therapeutic properties, smelling softly honeyed, earthy, and warm.

5. Why Your Skin Loves Calendula

So, why go to all this trouble? Because calendula is an absolute powerhouse for skin health:

  • Deeply Soothing & Anti-Inflammatory: It is legendary for calming irritated, red, or reactive skin, making it a sanctuary for sensitive complexions.

  • Skin Barrier Repair: Rich in flavonoids and antioxidants, it supports the skin’s natural healing process, helping to comfort dry, cracked, or chapped skin.

  • Gentle & Protective: It is exceptionally gentle, making it safe and nurturing for all skin types—from delicate daily facial oils to rich, comforting body balms and soaps.

When you use a product infused with our home-grown, triple-infused calendula, you aren't just putting lotion on your skin—you are wrapping yourself in months of patient, sunlight-warmed plant care.
