Endless Rain: The Pouring of Sanctuary Smoke
Updated: Sep 28
The forecast promised a break in the clouds today, but Pukerau had other plans. By 7:00 AM, the heavy New Zealand rain was drumming a steady, familiar rhythm against the high corrugated iron roof of the chapel.
On a clear day, you would find me outside. The garden beds are waking up, and the list of outdoor restoration tasks is always longer than the daylight hours allow. When the sun shines, production stops, the studio door is locked, and my hands are in the dirt.
But today, the weather forced me back inside. And honestly, I didn't mind.
There is a distinct magic to a Victorian church on a stormy afternoon. The light coming through the arched windows turns moody and deep, casting long amber shadows. The air inside stays cool, smelling faintly of vintage cedar and old paper. It is the perfect atmosphere for quiet, deliberate creation.
I spent the afternoon in my workshop at the slow, unhurried pace this building demands.

Today was the final blending of our newest fragrance oil: Sanctuary Smoke.
For months, I’ve wanted to capture a scent that bridges the historical weight of this building with a free-spirited, bohemian energy. I wanted something that felt sacred but deeply grounded—a natural, old-world take on a traditional nag champa style aroma.
Working in a small, intentional batch, I married the ingredients together in a base of golden jojoba oil:
Deep, earthy Patchouli to mirror the soil outside.
Sacred Frankincense resin, echoing the ancient history of sanctuary spaces.
Smooth, creamy Sandalwood to complement the church's aged wood.
Velvety Oakmoss, bringing the shadowed, damp forest floor inside.
As the oils settled, I lit a small brass censer on the altar table. Watching the smoke curl lazily toward the high rafters, surrounded by the quiet hum of the rain, I realized this is exactly why I stepped away from the corporate treadmill of deadlines, mass production, and impatient capitalism. This business is a lifestyle choice. It moves at the pace of the seasons, the weather, and the natural lifecycle of the botanicals.
If you’d like to take a piece of the chapel's history home with you, Sanctuary Smoke is now quietly sitting on our online shelves.
