The Chemistry: Why the Color Changes (And Why That’s Good)
pH Sensitivity of Anthocyanins: The natural purple pigments in elderberries (anthocyanins) are highly sensitive to pH levels. Cold-process soap saponification involves lye (sodium hydroxide), an alkaline environment with a high pH (~12–14 during mixing). When natural berry pigments hit high alkalinity, they naturally shift from bright purple to tan, soft grey, or warm cream tones.
Zero Synthetic Dyes or Micas: Many commercial "berry" soaps use artificial colorants, lab-created pigments, or lab dyes to force a bright purple color. Your natural cream tone is visual proof that your soap is genuinely colored by nature, not artificially dyed.
Nutrients Remain Intact: Even though the pigment changes color due to the pH shift, the skin-loving antioxidants, bioflavonoids, and moisturizing fatty acids from the elderberry juice and oil infusion remain active in the bar.
Why isn't our Elderberry Soap purple?
We get asked this a lot! We start every batch with rich, deep-purple wild elderberry juice and oil-infused berries. But when real berry juice meets the traditional cold-process saponification reaction, the high pH shifts those natural antioxidants from deep purple to a soft, natural cream color.
A lot of commercial soaps use artificial dyes or synthetic micas to force a purple bar. We choose pure results over fake colors. You get all the antioxidant benefits of real elderberry without a single synthetic dye or additive touching your skin.
